What kind of service are we doing?

During ASB, volunteers will be working directly with Newark children at the Boys and Girls Club locations throughout Newark. Before the children arrive on site (11am-2:30pm), volunteers will provide basic facilities upkeep. This could be anything from painting to organizing.

Between 3pm and 7:30pm volunteers will work with children. You will help them with homework, supervise gym time and coordinate educational activities. You will be provided with a daily program schedule and activity outline. Any activities requiring preparation will be given necessary prep time. Basic curriculum outlines will also be provided for each activity you lead.

Before ASB rolls around be sure to research activities you’d like to do with the children. In ASB Newark, these activities will be divided into rooms: Gym, Arts & Crafts, Imagination Station, Photo Lab, Computer Lab, Smart Moves Room and DJ Room.

Check out our Pinterest boards for more information about each room and examples of activities you can lead. (No login required!)

How will I get my beauty sleep?

If humans slept the recommended eight hours a day, we’d spend 1/3 of our lives asleep. That makes how and where you sleep pretty important. No wonder we get so many questions about it! So here are the answers to our frequently asked sleeping questions.

Where will we sleep?

  • During the week of ASB, we will be staying at the Central Ward Boys and Girls Club. We will most likely sleep in their gymnasium at night, and store our things in the locker rooms during the day.

What will we sleep on?

I’m flying and my sleeping bag wont fit in my luggage.

  • Purchase a sleeping bag that is easily compressed.
  • Bring sheets and a blanket.
  • Bring money and we can drive you to a retailer to purchase one.

But seriously, how do I ensure my eight hours of beauty sleep?

  • Starting at 10pm every night we will have lights out and quiet hours in the sleeping room. That does not mean that everyone has to go sleep, but it does mean that everyone will be respectful of those who do.
  • Breakfast will be served between 7 and 9am depending on the day.

WWMPP: What Would Mary Poppins Pack

Let’s face it, most of us DO NOT have access to Mary Poppin’s magical bottomless bag or Hermione Granger’s Undetectable Extension Charm. If we did, traveling would be a whole lot easier. So here’s a list of suggested items to make your packing a little easier:

  • Sleeping bags/Blankets and pillows
  • Clothes & Shoes that you can paint in and get dirty
  • Gym clothes and casual clothes **appropriate for working with children**
  • Toiletries
    • Toothbrush
    • Toothpaste
    • Deodorant
    • Body wash/soap
    • Shampoo
    • etc
  • Towel
  • Bathing Suit (for group shower situation)
  • Medications that are prescribed
  • EpiPen (if you need one)
  • Phone charger
  • Journal/pens

We are not responsible for lost or stolen items, so we recommend that you DO NOT bring large amounts of cash or valuable items. We will provide a locked area to keep personal items during service hours.

Ahhh! How am I getting to Newark?

Whether you’re leaving on a jet plane or taking the midnight train to Georgia Newark, we will do our best to get you to and from the Boys and Girls Club. To ensure that we are able to pick you up on time, please make your travel arrangements within these time frames:

Arrival: Sunday between Noon and 4 pm.
Departure: Saturday between 8 am and Noon.
We also ask that you fill out a travel survey, so that we know exactly when and where to pick you up.
Safe travels to all of you! And here’s a song to start off your journey. (Fred Schneider, B-52’s frontman and founder, is a native of Newark, NJ!)
